CHINESE TRADITION AND GLOBALIZATION 1
SESSION ONE: BASIC PRINCIPLES
This course explores the place of China, with its long term traditions, in the contemporary world. In what ways is China distinct from the West and what does it share with other philosophical cultures? Today recent scientific discoveries about human sociality can also cast valuable new light on the nature of Chinese tradition with implications for mutual understanding and the continuing dialogue between East and West. Here concerns with philosophy, science and identity combine.
Initially we will be guided by the following questions:
1. What do we all bring to this discussion, individually and as a group?
2. Should we think in terms of a ‘Chinese tradition’ or ‘Chinese traditions’?
3. What do we understand by the term ‘globalization’?
4. What can the rest of the world learn from China?
5. What is the future of East-West relations, in your view?
